This incident is indicative of the blatent disregard of civilian safety and rights by the NYPD. It is not just a few out of control Officers; it is behavior sanctioned by the command structure and is reinforced each time an Officer breaks the law and gets away with it.
Police destroying or stealing people's property is not legal. By putting themselves above the law the police lose the moral authority to enforce it, futher alienating themselves from those they've sworn to Protect and Serve.
Contributions in excess of a camera for FluxRostrum will go toward putting
the Mo'BIO Media Bus on the road for the upcoming presidential selection cycle
and/or a bus for IVAW / VFP Deployment Projects.
anonymous journalist ~ Many of us including myself have been targets of repression here in the US doing the media work that we do. In Miami during the Free Trade Area of the America’s Demonstrations I was targeted by police while I was video taping their presence on the city street they surrounded me, pummeled me, attacked me with high pressure pepper spray, shot me with Tazers two times consecutively, arrested me, stole my camera and the tape in it, and charged me with 3 felonies. All this because I was standing on a corner and filming events of the day. I later got off of all charges but have not recovered the tape or camera, nor have I recovered from the trauma. At that same event in a different location another Videographer was robbed at gunpoint. Assumingly plain-clothed officers stole his camera. Other Indymedia journalists we work with had their cameras stolen at gunpoint there. Some cameras were just snatched from Indymedia journalists. It has become routine occurrence for independent journalists to be targeted as those who choose to abuse would prefer to not have a video record of their abuses. ~ anonymous journalist

" For one to be a revolutionary ... at all, there must first be a revolution.
Isolated individual endeavor, for all its purity of ideals, is of no use,
and the desire to sacrifice an entire lifetime to the noblest of ideals serves no purpose
if one works alone, solitarily,
in some corner of America,
fighting against adverse governments and social conditions
which prevent progress."
