Alternative Energy

Why I'm not Covering This or That Event Right Now

vintage solar powered hatBack in the 80's I gave my grandfather a solar powered hat with a fan on it that blows a wind on your head as long as the sun's out.  I thought this would make his life working the farm in the hot sun more enjoyable.  He never wore it beyond the mandatory initial try it on for everybody show.  I always assumed it didn't really work because it was just a weird gimicky "future" thing.  It worked.  I guess it was too much technology for him.  It still works, and now I'm wearing grandpa's hat.

Filtering Waste Veggie Oil in NOLA

Time lapse photos of 2 afternoons worth of heating, filtering and pumping about a 100 gallons of waste veggie oil.   I'm fueling up to head into the Alabama Tornado Zone in a couple days and then on to the March on Blair Mountain.

The Che Bus

Veggie bus alternative energy workshop and radical art mobile space at the the Anti-COP Anti-Cap encampment. The Che Bus kicks The NoMadjik bus's ass. Rolling with a crew of 10-20 mad maxtivists Christian teaches rural villagers how to use bicycles for specific tasks that usually need electricity as well as water catching and other self sustaining adaptations of hybrid technology. The Che bus brings the knowledge and the party to the people. ~

350 International Get To Work Day ~ Austin TX

a Global Work Party, with emphasis on both 'work' and 'party'. In Auckland, New Zealand, they're having a giant bike fix-up day, to get every bicycle in the city back on the road. In the Maldives, they're putting up solar panels on the President's office.  In Kampala, Uganda, they're going to plant thousands of trees, and in Bolivia they're installing solar stoves for a massive carbon neutral picnic.

In Austin Greenpeace wrangled petition signature collectors to pressure the government to stop building more fossil fuel infrastructure.

Rescind mining permits on Coal River Mountain ~ October 19, 2009

Dear Governor Manchin,

As residents of West Virginias Coal River Valley we write you to declare a state of emergency.  Coal River Mountain is our last mountain untouched by mountaintop removal and it is in imminent danger of blasting. This would not only threaten our communities, it would also destroy our chance to have permanent jobs and renewable energy through ridge-top wind power. You have the power to rescind these permits.
