Getting to the Games

Sometimes Getting There IS the Battle               this comes to us by way of the TCIMC

Reminding us of its nationalist/fascist roots, as the carefully stage-managed 2010 Olympics gets underway in Vancouver, around a billion dollars have been expended on security theater measures. While Canadian authorities want to encourage people to attend the Olympics, Canadian border and customs officials (Canadian Border Services Agencies) have teamed up to suppress the movement of Indymedia and other independent media reporters into Canada.

Senior's March on Grit TV

A segment from my Senior's March to End MTR series is included in this episode of Grit TV, thanks Sam & Laura.

Rush Limbaugh tried (and failed) to buy a football team, Obama picked a fight with FOX News, and oh yeah–there’s still ongoing debate over health care reform, two wars, and a major recession. There was plenty of bad (and a little good) to debate in this week’s media coverage.

Katrina vanden Heuvel of The Nation, Joe Conason of The New York Observer, and Air America’s Sam Seder joined our media panel, discussing the best and worst of this week in journalism, pointing out the flaws and asking why the right wing always seems to make news, while the left can barely grab a headline.

The saga of the NOmadjik Media Bus at the Republican National Convention played out among context that will sadden anyone who believes in freedom and democracy. The RNC in St. Paul was an exercise in intimidation, harassment and preemptive arrest of JOURNALISTS.

Cops probe indymedia bus for 'corpses'?

By Dave Orrick | dorrick@pioneerpress.com | photo by Larry Hildes

It's unclear why, but police put the heat on a weathered school bus Tuesday used by an independent media organization.

The group says the cops said they were looking for "dead bodies."

Police refused to provide any information on their actions, but a spokesman said the corpse thing was absurd.

"Does that sound logical?" police spokesman Tom Walsh asked. "We do things logically."

Larry Hildes, a California attorney and a legal observer with the National Lawyers Guild, said he saw a St. Paul police officer trying to pry the bus' side door open around 4:45 p.m. in a parking lot in Lowertown, where the bus was parked. "She informed me she was looking for dead bodies," said Hildes. "I informed here there were none." Hildes asked for a warrant; he said the police said they had none and left.

Hildes said bands of officers returned several times, at one point driving by slowly while one officer shined a light at the blocked-out windows and videotaped the bus.

"We're completely above-board," said Mary-Kate Stoever, a.k.a. Skinny Chef. "We just live in the bus."

Hours later, a Pioneer Press reporter observed a police car parked near the bus; the officer appeared to be watching. When asked what the cops were up to, Walsh responded, "I don't know anything about it. ... Nope, I'm not going to look into it either."

In addition to widespread denial of medical attention, multiple people have been brutalized by Sheriff’s Deputies inside their cells.

At a press conference earlier today, recently released activist Elliot Hughes made statements that while in jail he had a bag placed over his head, a gag in his mouth, and was beaten to unconsciousness by multiple correctional officers.

RNC update

The Glass Bead Collective had all of their property returned except drivers licenses and cash. Yesterday the cops with 3 SUVs full of riot cops did synchronized donuts in the parking lot for awhile yesterday. This occurred while I was handing off a video to the Acquisitions Director of Free Speech TV, who spoke with the commanding officer and requested that they stop harassing and arresting journalists. The cops eventually left. We expect to see them again today .. about 5:25 that's when they've been showing up.
